Why Can’t I Smell My Wax Melts? Common Causes & What to Try

You’ve chosen a fragrance you love, popped your wax melt into the burner and settled down to enjoy it. But what if the scent seems faint, or you can’t notice it anymore?

Before adding more wax or giving up on your favourite fragrance, there are a few things worth checking.

Is your burner suitable for wax melts?

Start with the instructions supplied with your burner. Different designs warm wax differently, and not every oil burner is suitable for wax melts.

For an electric warmer, use the specified bulb or heating setup. For a tealight burner, use only the tealight type and size recommended by its manufacturer. Never use a larger candle or modify your burner to try to make the fragrance stronger.

Let the wax warm as directed, and never leave your burner unattended while it’s in use.

Are you using the recommended amount of wax?

More wax doesn’t automatically mean more noticeable fragrance. Follow the guidance supplied with your wax and burner, and don’t overfill the dish.

If the scent seems faint, check your setup before adding extra cubes. Never add fragrance oil, water or other substances to your wax melts.

Is the room affecting what you notice?

A fragrance can seem different in a small room compared with a large, open-plan space. Open windows, draughts and ventilation can also affect how noticeable it is.

Choose a stable, heat-resistant surface with the clearance your burner requires. Don’t move a hot burner or compromise ventilation to try to keep fragrance in the room.

Have you become used to the scent?

Sometimes a fragrance becomes less noticeable to you after you’ve been around it for a while. That doesn’t necessarily mean the wax has stopped releasing scent.

After switching off or extinguishing your burner safely, take a break from the fragrance. Avoid automatically adding more wax simply because you aren’t noticing it as much.

Has the wax reached the end of its fragrance?

Wax melts don’t disappear like candle wax does. Wax can remain in the dish even when its fragrance has faded.

How long you notice a scent varies with the blend, burner and use. Once the fragrance is no longer noticeable after checking the other factors, allow everything to cool and replace the wax following your burner’s instructions.

Don’t pour wax down the sink.

How have your unused melts been stored?

Keep unused melts in their packaging, away from direct sunlight and heat, following the storage guidance supplied with them. A cool, dry storage spot is a sensible starting point.

Choose fragrance notes you genuinely enjoy

Some blends will feel softer to your nose than others. Read the fragrance notes rather than choosing purely by the promise of a “strong” scent.

Our soy wax melts include fruity, floral, spicy and woody options to explore. If you’re choosing a wax melt burner, check its individual details and instructions too.

If you’re unsure about one of our melts, send me a message with the fragrance name and the burner you’re using. I’ll help you work through what to check.
